Best Lecture 1:
What is Literature? This was actually the topic of the very first lecture on this class. It was definitely a great way to start the semester. The way Professor Brady laid out the details of understanding literature. It is meant to inform, entertain, promote social /political change, and to relate to the human spirit. Literature is delivered to us in the form of art, music, plays, movies, etc. All of this things have the foundation of literature. Literature touches us each and every day even if we do not pick up a single thing to read. It's such an important part of our lives.
Best Lecture 2:
In March we discussed Existentialism vs. Fate in relation to the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Existentialism is the thought that individuals have the freedom to create their own meaning and purpose in life. Whereas fate is the thought that individuals have a predetermined destiny. I applied these principles when reading The Notebook. In the beginning of the novel Noah believes that each and every day a miracle occurs when Ally remembers him and their life. All the while, however, Noah is determined to follow a certain process and plays a role in that miracle.
Best Lecture 3:
Another favorite lecture was a discussion about The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. This really interested me because the stories took place during a very controversial war and time period. There was a lot going on in that era and it was quite a few years before I was born. The stories show the truth about war and how it affects the soldiers. Their trauma, loneliness, guilt and so many other emotions.
